What Is Supervision?
While there is no single or agreed definition of supervision, at its core, supervision is a process of professional learning and development that enables you to reflect on and develop your knowledge, skills, and competence, through agreed and regular support with another professional. Supervision is different from line management and focuses on building a safe space for reflective practice.
One of the key benefits/aims of supervision is that it reduces the feeling of being alone in managing a problem. Isolation can cause a great deal of stress if someone feels that they are carrying something on their own. In this way, regular, planned supervision can play a role in ensuring that you have appropriate support.
My main theoretical approaches for supervision use Proctor’s Model of Clinical Supervision, and Hawkins and Shohet’s the Seven Eyed Model.
